I began work on Bread For The
Journey in 1993,
about a year after the release of my first album, Songs
For The Inner Child. I had been collecting songs
that had touched me deeply, some of them songs I had
been carrying in my heart for
many years. As Russell Walden and I began to work on
creating accompaniments for the songs, the vision for
the album emerged: a sort of buffet of "soul food".
The songs I chose for this collection affirm the presence
of the divine in all things, my love of the Earth,
my deep appreciation
of that which is magical and mysterious in this world,
the preciousness of finding humor in the bittersweet
experiences of life. A somewhat eclectic group of songs,
(I'm an eclectic kind of girl, by nature
) they
were put in a specific sequence to give you a journey-like
experience as you listen.
The process of creating the album gave me the opportunity
to collaborate with a fabulous group of musicians, all
of whom brought their unique gifts to the songs.
As with my Songs For The Inner Child, I've been
touched and gratified by the letters and phone calls
I've received from people who have been moved by Bread
For The Journey. I've heard that it appeals to
adults of all ages, as well as children, making it
the kind of collection that families can enjoy together.
I've heard from clergy of many denominations who use the
songs as a source of inspiration in their services
and retreats. In addition, the songs have been played
by hospice and hospital workers as a
source of comfort for the sick and dying.
It continues to be my great pleasure to offer music that
can touch the heart and feed the soul. If you're moved to
give Bread For The Journey a listen, I hope
you'll find something in the collection to nourish
and inspire you, whatever your journey may be.
