Healing and Recovery Uses

working with children

Parents, teachers, and therapists have used the songs with children of all ages. Many parents have written to tell me that their children go to sleep every night listening to Songs for the Inner Child. I've heard of cranky babies being rapidly soothed, (and their parents, too) and some hyperactive children who settle and calm when the songs are being played. Kindergarten and preschool teachers have made use of them in the classroom for similar purposes with great success.

Classroom Uses

1. Kim Shostak, of Lancaster, California, wrote the following:

"I just want to tell you how beautiful your music is and how much I enjoy sharing it with my students over these past few years. I have taught all grades and I also sub on my 'off' track times. Shaina, there is not a soul that isn't soothed by your gentleness. I teach "How Could Anyone" and "Its a Joy to get to know You" in sign language to all my students. I teach "Its a joy" on the first day of school.

Shaina, every single child responds (and most grown-ups are usually sobbing by the time we are done performing!) Hundreds of children and adults have been touched by your beautiful words and music. Maybe a few of these hundreds have in some way shared this beauty with others... you know, how things ripple."

We use your song "How Could Anyone" with sign language in our Kindergarten class on Mothers Day; not a dry eye in the classroom.

Kandice Jones, therapist with the Therapeutic Foster Care Program, writes:

I am a mental health therapist working with highly traumatized children in therapeutic foster care. Most are in foster care or early adoptive placements after transitioning from our Therapeutic Foster Care program. Most have suffered severe parental abuse and neglect in their very tender years.

I have found your music both inspiring to myself in my own healing journey and highly effective to the children and families in my program. Oftentimes music reaches them on a safer/deeper level when speaking the words may be too frightening for them. I frequently use it in my attachment work between foster/adoptive/biological parents and their children during therapeutic activities that include nurturing and holding by the current caregiver. It not only evokes strong emotions in the children, but also in the parents and myself as we feel intense sadness for the children's past loss and wonderful hope for their future.

I would highly recommend your music to other mental health professionals working with traumatized persons, but find it especially powerful for children who have developed major problems building trust and attachments in those who want to give them love and help them heal.

Parents and Children

Jill Forrest from Massachusetts writes:

When I had triplets I was given this tape. I was feeling tired, depressed and uncomfortable. I was up all night holding one of the babies while they slept and listened to this CD over and over again! Out of all of the hundreds of gifts I received this was the first thank you I sent out. I didn't even know the women who had mailed it to me. She had met my husband while walking at the beach and he told her what a hard time I was having. I am now buying this tape for my mom, my aunt and sister who listen to the tape all the time when they come over to help out with the babies. It is a beautiful CD and my kids will grow up listening to them.

Thank you!

My name is Tanja and I come from Germany. When I gave birth to my daughter in August 1st this year, I found your CD in the hospital, in the room where the mothers can breast feed their babies. My daughter Marie was crying alot and whenever I turned on your CD, she calmed down. So during the time in the hospital, I went to the "breast feeding room" every night where we could turn on your CD and listen to it. While Marie calmed down I started to cry, because the music and the words really touched my heart. I have the CD at home now and it's "our special music".

Very, very nice music, it will allways remind me of the first very special days with my daughter!

Greetings from Germany,

Life-threatening Illnesses

The songs have been used as a tool to soothe and calm children dealing with life-threatening illnesses. They have been played for children undergoing treatment for cancer and other serious diseases, to help them sleep, to help them relax during painful procedures, and, in some instances, to help them make their passage out of this life.

The use of the songs with children who are dying has been deeply moving to me personally. I have heard of numerous families who have had the songs brought to them by a friend, a nurse, or a family member when their child was seriously ill. They have then played the songs to comfort the child in the last stages of their illness, sometimes as the child took their last breath.

Many of these families have then played selected songs at their child's memorial service, and after, as a comforting bridge to the child they have lost.

Neo-natal Wards at Hospitals

The songs have been played to help comfort babies born prematurely, or with any kind of physical problems after birth. Especially when a baby is too fragile to be held, the songs can be a tool to help support the child emotionally under these extreme circumstances.

The songs were chosen and recorded to deeply presence the energy of a loving mother. This is supportive, not only of the babies themselves, but of the nursing staff, and the parents who can be very stressed out and worried when a child is born prematurely, or has neo-natal stress of any kind.

I just wanted to let you know how much I love your cd Songs for the Inner Child. My Aunt introduced me to it when I received my first reiki treatment from her. When I became a reiki practitioner, I began to use it in my sessions. It is the one cd I find that releases the most negative energy while replacing that with positive. It allows energy to flow more freely and has caused acceptance of energy in individuals who were not previously accepting. It helps my children fall asleep at night and (I think) fills their heads with wonderfully positive self images.

I also brought it to work to use. I work nights (7pm-7am) in a newborn nursery. Your CD helps keep the babies sleeping, it puts me in a better, more healing mood, even on my worst days. I can put it on repeat and never grow tired of it (which is not true of lots of music) and it changes the whole energy flow in the nursery. I am so glad I found your music and plan now to purchase your other CD's. Thank you, and keep up the good work.

Namaste,
