Bread for the Journey by Shaina Noll

Project Inspiration

In the spring of 2005, Cathy Chapman contacted me with a request. She was interested in recording a guided journey for healing disturbances or trauma experienced from conception-through-birth. She contacted me, asking if I might consider writing and recording a song to follow her guided journey on the CD. I told her that I was open to the possibility, but that I was not a prolific songwriter, and would have to see if my “muse” made an appearance in response to her request.

We scheduled a phone meeting to discuss the core concepts that we both felt would be nourishing, supportive and embracing for someone who had just been through an inner journey of re-creating their experience from conception-through-birth. Both of us have training as counselors/therapists, had been on a long journey of healing, ourselves, and had a strong sense of what a song might offer at the end of a powerful and, hopefully, healing experience.

I ended the conversation by telling her I would sit with my notes from our conversation, see if anything came to me, and be in touch if it did. As it turned out, I had a profound wave of inspiration that very day, and the entire song, “A Place For You Here” came to me that afternoon. I was very moved by this experience, and very confirmed that this collaboration with Cathy was a relevant use of my particular energy and talent. With this dramatic “green light”, we began the process of creating the CD.

Soon after I began working on the fine-tuning and arranging of the song, it became clear to me that it would be much more powerful and impactful if my husband, Richard, sang it with me, so that we could offer this loving song of welcome from the voices of the father and the mother. I invited him to sing the song with me, and a deep process unfolded for all three of us as we set about creating this CD.
